I'd think that HEVC support should only get better from here on out anyway.Īs far as settings, I read a bunch of older discussions that recommended using -no-sao or -tune=grain. But this server has some juice and it's just for us, so even if someone uses a device that requires transcoding it shouldn't be a problem. From what I've read, transcoding H.265 down to H.264 is relatively intensive.

My Shield TV, Roku, and Android tablet can all directplay/stream the HEVC just fine. I tested a selection of clips with different settings, but a simple crf19, preset=slow reencode seems to work great. But for more casual, fun movies or TV shows that seems like overkill. We're serious about film in our house, so for better, more artful movies I still plan to keep the original bluray rips. I've been doing some testing with x265 over the last week or so and I've been quite happy with the results. What are people's experiences with x265 these days? What settings do you like for your reencodes? I searched and found some discussions, but they weren't very recent and I know that x265 is still developing rapidly.
